Patrick J. Karol,

Are you preparing to study for the ASP, CSP, or CHST exams and confused about which resources to study? There are many to choose from, and all can fill a knowledge gap. It is among the most frequent questions we receive as exam prep instructors. We recommend these resources for any safety professional whether or not you intend to pursue a BCSP certification.

1 – Nito Solutions exam prep material. This comprehensive resource includes an exam Study Guide and a 400 question practice test. We’ve meticulously reviewed each question and provided additional resources to ensure you have a solid foundation for the ASP, CSP or CHST exam.

#2 – ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and accompanying documents address several topics you could see on both exams, including elements of a safety management system and the PDCA process championed by Edwards Deming. The accompanying documents, including the Z10.0 Guidance Manual and Z10.0 Implementation Manual, provide additional insight into current management and safety leadership theory.

3 – The Safety Training Ninja by Regina McMichael. This book covers a wide range of topics related to training, from adult learning theory to dealing with difficult trainees. If you're a safety professional involved in training, this is a cost-effective and comprehensive resource for you.

#4—Safety Professional’s Reference & Study Guide by W.D. Yates. If you are looking for an all-around good resource that covers every topic on the BCSP blueprint for the ASP, CSP, and CHST, this is it. However, it does not go deep into any topic and is rather expensive if bought new.

#5—Any of the National Safety Council’s manuals. We recommend three: Accident Prevention Manual for Business & Industry: Administration and Programs, Accident Prevention Manual for Business &Industry: Engineering and Technology, and The Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene. All are textbooks that go into great depth. However, if bought new, they are very expensive. I used the Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene to fill my gap and still use it as a reference today.

This is not an all-inclusive list; however, it includes some of the resources we are most familiar with and recommend. You may find other resources that fill your specific gaps.
